Volunteer Registration Form - Classroom Assistant for English Language Learners

Volunteer Registration Form - Classroom Assistant for English Language Learners

Help English language learners in their classroom for the quarter!

Do you want to support fellow Edmonds College students who have moved to the U.S. from other countries and are learning English? Sign up to volunteer in an ELA (English Language Acquisition) class or study hall this quarter!

Many immigrant and refugee community members have less access to employment and education because of their limited English skills. By assisting in an ELA classroom, student volunteers will be making a direct impact on strengthening people’s language skills, which will help ELA students reach their personal and professional goals.

Please fill out this form to register for the Classroom Assistant for English Language Learners volunteer opportunity.

Please note that:
*Background checks are required by HR
*Commitment to volunteer is once a week (1 - 2 hours depending on class)
*Volunteers start after approval from the faculty member and ends after Week 8
*Minimum 5-6 times per quarter

Once submitted, you will be contacted by ELA faculty member Karen Sanchez to schedule a meeting to discuss your interest and placement.

Volunteer Description:
As a volunteer, you will observe and assist in ELA classes. You will experience how a classroom is managed, how lessons proceed, and how language learning activities are used in a classroom to improve a student’s English. By working with ELA students at Edmonds College, you will learn more about cross-cultural communication by working with members of the immigrant and refugee population in our community.

Student volunteers will provide support to students who are learning English under the guidance of the classroom instructor. This could include working one-on-one with students, guiding group conversations, modeling English dialogue, helping with writing and grammar corrections, monitoring a Zoom screen, and other tasks as teachers need.
